Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis

Guidelines

Getting self supported

Staff members of the ZMB teach you the operation of instruments and microscopes, preparation techniques and methods. Teaching is currently free of charge. If you are prevented to attend an appointment with our staff, please cancel the meeting at least 24 hours prior to the date.

Acknowledgments

All work published that include results obtained using resources of the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis must be acknowledged and a copy of the publication should be sent as paper or pdf to the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis (info@zmb.uzh.ch).

Examples for acknowledgments

"Imaging was performed with equipment maintained by the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis, University of Zurich."
"Imaging was performed with support of the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis, University of Zurich."
"The authors acknowledge the assistance and support of the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis, University of Zurich for performing scanning electron microscopy experiments."

Sample processing and imaging by the staff of ZMB

The Center for Microscopy will charge the time used for all the preparative steps and imaging as well as the needed consumables (Fees).

The Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis must be acknowledged and a copy of the publication should be sent as paper or pdf to the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis.

Collaborations

Scientific projects can be performed in collaboration with the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis. Collaboration are typically characterized by intensive scientific input, extensive preparation and analysis of the samples but also operation of instruments. Staff members of the Center of Microscopy and Image Analysis involved in collaboration must be authors of resulting publication.

Consultation

Methodical problems concerning imaging and microscopy can be discussed with staff members of the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis.

Fees

Instruments are charged automatically based on the entries in the reservation system and based on their hourly price. Accounting will be done every four months (end of April, August, December).

Reservation and use of systems maintained by the ZMB

Access to systems is possible 24h every day for users having the necessary knowledge to work independently and safe during evenings, nights and weekends.

Reservations of systems is mandatory prior to its usage. Reservations must be done for the whole time the system is used. Logging on to the systems must be done with the users own username and password.

Maximum allowed booking time for light microscopes should be limited to 4 hours per session, except for live cell experiments. Exceptions can be granted for special imaging demands by staff of the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis. Please contact the person responsible for the instrument.

Problems with systems must be communicated to the staff of the ZMB.

Biosafety

All work involving biosafety class 2 organisms on all our systems must be performed according to GLP and biosafety regulations of the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis, University of Zurich and the BAG (Bundesamt für Gesundheit).

The Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis relies on each principal investigator and respective lab biosafety officers to ensure their researchers adhere to all biosafety rules within the microscopy  rooms.

The class 2 cell culture lab may be used for culturing and preparing cells for experiments performed with all systems at the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the biosafety officer Claudia Dumrese before starting your work.

Data retention policy on ZMB servers

Data stored on the ZMB 'data' network drive is retained for 90 days after the last modification date (effective from 1 October 2024). You will receive an email notification before data is deleted. Please note that we do not back up your data. While the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis monitors servers to enhance data security, we are not responsible for any data loss.

An exception to this policy applies to files stored in the network drive 'home.' This data is backed up and will not be deleted as long as you remain an active user at the Center.
