Consulting in Image and Data Analysis

The aim of our consulting is to enable the users of the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis to solve their image processing challenges. This means that we can guide you how to correctly apply tools and outline possible image processing pipelines and solutions. In addition, we can help in evaluating data quality, proper statistics and necessary controls.

In the consulting sessions, we use tools available on our virtualized infrastructure. This requires that the applicant is a registered user of the ZMB. It is also helpful if the users make themselves familiar with our virtualized infrastructure and try to work on the data with the available tools before coming for a consulting.

For some frequently requested image analysis tasks, we also have easy to understand manuals and hands-on tutorials in the Tutorials and Resources section.

Due to the limited resources and to give our users the best possible support, we prioritize, if needed, supporting users who work on data acquired on the ZMB microscopes.

All staff member of the ZMB can show our users how to access the virtual infrastructure and support users on how to process and visualize their imaging data. For more complex requests our image processing and data analysis specialists  Joana Delgado Martins and Urs Ziegler can further consult the users.

For getting the most out of a consulting session, it is very important to have access to a few representative raw microscope datasets. Therefore we recommend to copy them to the ZMB transfer folder prior to an appointment.

At the ZMB we use and deploy open source as well as commercial tools for image processing and data analysis. It is our philosophy to always use the most simple, accessible and easy to learn tool for performing a certain image analysis task.

Our resources for consulting are limited. Try to contact us as early as possible as it may be difficult to arrange appointments on short notice. In addition, the total time we can spend for a single user is usually in the range of 1-2h.

If you want to apply for an image analysis consulting, please write an email to In order to consult you properly it’s very helpful if you outline your image analysis challenge in a few sentences.

As stated in the ZMB guidelines, studies using infrastructure and or consulting by the Center of Microscopy and Image Analysis must be acknowledged in publications.
